Chang Chiu-ling's "Fu on a White Feather Fan" Tung Ch'i-ch'ang (A.D. 1555- 1636) Ming Dynasty Ink on thin silk. Semi- cursive script. Hanging scroll. 136.5 x 60.2cm. Tung Ch'i-ch'ang, styled Hsuan-ts'ai, was a native of Hua-t'ing, Kiangsu. He was a scholar of superior talent and ability, passing the chin-shih examination during the Wan-li period (A.D. 1573- 1619 ). A great painter and calligrapher of the Ming period, his painting is said to be free and lively, his calligraphy mature and stately, his brush strokes elegant and full. His work is reminiscent of the great calligraphers of the T'ang and Yuan periods.
